Scott Fredericks has died

The actor Scott Fredericks has died. Scott was best known to Doctor Who fans as 'Boaz' in 'Day of the Daleks' and 'Max Stael' in 'Image of the Fendahl'. He also played the strategist 'Carnell' in the Blakes 7 episode 'Weapon' written by Chris Boucher, a role he later reprised in the audio series 'Kaldor City' - a DW/B7 cross over.

Scott was well known for playing very Germanic characters, probably due in part to his appearance, and was in fact cast as a Nazi in the 'Dad's Army' film released in 1971 (one of the airmen who took siege in the Town Hall). In fact, Scott was Irish and spent many of the last few years in Arklow on the east coast and then Co. Sligo further west.

Scott was a guest at a number of DWAS events, most recently the launch of the 'Day of the Daleks Special Edition DVD' in 2011 at Riverside Studios. He was not well at this point and made a great effort to be with us, his only condition being that we did not make him fly over on Ryan Air!
Scott worked on many TV shows during his career including 'Crossroads', 'Dixon of Dock Green', and 'Triangle'. Later he was a regular cast member on the RTE series, 'Fair City'.

His obituary from Irish Equity can be viewed here and you can see a video of part of his 'Day of the Daleks' panel at the DWAS You Tube channel.

Jodie Whittaker’s new Doctor Who costume and TARDIS have been revealed

Just a few weeks after Jodie Whittaker’s Tardis team was revealed, yet more details of her new Doctor have been unveiled – the brand-new costume and TARDIS exterior that will feature in her first series next autumn.

A far cry from the black hoody seen in Whittaker’s announcement video, the new outfit is a typically colourful and eccentric look for the Doctor (with boots and braces Matt Smith’s incarnation would appreciate), while the Tardis seems to have had a bit of a makeover itself.

Gone is the St John’s Ambulance logo that’s appeared on the right-hand door since 2010 (having appeared on the original 1960s TARDIS as well), while the colour of the iconic “Pull handle to open” sign has inverted to a darker shade.

Third Doctor and Jo vs. the Meddling Monk from Big Finish

The ultimate showdown is coming out in March 2018 with Volume Four of The Third Doctor Adventures, where the Third Doctor and Jo take on the Meddling Monk!

Tim Treloar and Katy Manning return to play the Third Doctor and Jo Grant, with Rufus Hound reprising the Meddling Monk. Rufus has previously played the role in The Early Adventures: The Black Hole, Doom Coalition 4 and two Short Trips – The Blame Game and How to Win Planets and Influence People.

The Rise of the New Humans by Guy Adams will be the first of two adventures in The Third Doctor Adventures Volume Four. Investigating a mysterious death, the Doctor and Jo are drawn to a research facility on Dartmoor called the Allingham Institute. What developments has Dr Kurdi pioneered? And who is the Chief Administrator?

Producer David Richardson tells us what to expect from this next chapter of adventures for the Third Doctor: “Volume Four is something of a real fan pleaser, I think. We have Rise of the New Humans which pits the Third Doctor and Jo against the Meddling Monk – who is so sublimely played by Rufus Hound. And then we have… ah, wait and see…

“The second story will be announced in a few weeks’ time, but let’s just say it features an enemy that listeners have been asking for since The Third Doctor Adventures started!”

To be released in March 2018, The Third Doctor Adventures Volume Four is available for pre-order at £25 on CD or £20 on download. Don’t forget that all CD purchases unlock a download exclusive from the Big Finish App and the Big Finish website.

New Doctor Who Christmas special scene to be unveiled on Children in Need

While we still have a couple of months before we see this year’s eagerly-anticipated Doctor Who Christmas special (featuring the debut of new Doctor Jodie Whittaker), fans won’t have to wait too long before they get to see a little bit more of Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi’s final stand – because a special “sneak peek” of Twice Upon a Time is coming to TV next week.

RadioTimes.com has confirmed with the BBC that the clip will air on BBC1 during Friday 17th November’s Children in Need broadcast, and will take the form of a scene from the final episode rather than a special one-off scene created specifically for Children in Need, as has sometimes been the case.

The clip is set to air during the earlier part of the Children in Need broadcast (7:30-10:00pm), and continues a tradition stretching back to 2005 when fans got their very first look at David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor in action for that year’s broadcast. Since then, the series has almost always produced a one-off sketch or preview clip associated with the Christmas special for fans to enjoy during the charity event, so it’s great to see the tradition continue.

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2017 | Trailer

Currently, it’s unclear exactly what the content of this new scene will be, but it seems likely the first-look footage will involve Capaldi and David Bradley’s First Doctor, with the Harry Potter and Game of Thrones star taking over the iconic role from late original actor William Hartnell (who played this first incarnation of the Time Lord in the 1960s).

Whatever the footage ends up being of, though, we’re sure it’ll be just the thing to whet fans’ appetites for the full Christmas meal this December. We’re starting our own Doctor Who advent calendar early this year…

The end of Torchwood from Big Finish?

The alien occupation will come to a head in the final volume of Torchwood – Aliens Among Us 3, out in February next year.

The third and final volume of the new series of Torchwood – Aliens Among Us, sees the team facing their biggest threat so far. (And if you’ve heard the epic cliffhanger to the second volume, you’ll know what and who that is!).

“As if things weren’t bad enough for Torchwood, now they’ve got that to deal with!” says producer James Goss. “The twist was Russell (T Davies)’s suggestion – but it’s not all about that. We’ve got Joseph Lidster’s take on vigilante groups, Helen Goldwyn’s story about a quiz night run by a religious maniac, and we’ve got exploding ramblers!”

TORCHWOOD: ALIENS AMONG US PART 1

James continues: “We’ll see Captain Jack’s (John Barrowman) plans fall horridly apart, Gwen (Eve Myles) and Rhys (Kai Owen) go on a blood-soaked double date with Mr Colchester (Paul Clayton) and his husband Colin (Ramon Tikaram). Orr (Samantha BĂ©art) tries to solve the internet, Andy Davidson (Tom Price) gets asked out for dinner, and Terence Hardiman (from the BBC's The Demon Headmaster) plays a character called Escape.”

The four tales in this finale come from writers Tim Foley, Joseph Lidster, Helen Goldwyn and producer James Goss.

5.9 Poker Face by Tim Foley

Torchwood are in trouble. Terrorist attacks are rocking the city. Control of the police has been ceded to Cardiff's alien masters. And it looks like it's all been arranged by Captain Jack Harkness.
Worse, there's a dead woman in the cells who says that Torchwood will be hers by dawn.

5.10 Tagged by Joseph Lidster
"I know what you've done. I know what you'll do."
The phrase starts appearing everywhere around Cardiff. On posters. On the internet. It's just a prank, isn't it?
Only a wave of vigilante crime spreads through the city. People are taking revenge. Suddenly everyone knows what you've done. And they know what you'll do.

5.11 Escape Room by Helen Goldwyn
Gwen Cooper, Rhys Williams, and the Colchester-Prices go to try out an escape room. They've heard a lot about them. Especially this one.
People keep going into the game and not coming out. But Torchwood will be fine. After all - partners can trust each other. Can't they?

5.12 Herald of the Dawn by James Goss
It all starts normally enough. A car park full of ramblers is incinerated by a thunderbolt.
But the next day it's clear there's something very wrong. Something's changed. Something's coming. It's the end of the world. And that's what Torchwood are best at.

Aliens Among Us Part 3 is available for pre-order on CD at £28 or on download for £25, and will be released in February 2018. Aliens Among Us Part 1 and Part 2 are also available here.

Or why not save money by getting all of Series 5: Aliens Among Us in a bundle for £75 on CD or £60 on download.

Doctor Who composer Dudley Simpson has died

The sad news that composer Dudley Simpson has died aged 95

Dudley Simpson (4 October 1922 – 4 November 2017) was an Australian composer and conductor.

He was the Principal Conductor of the Royal Opera House orchestra for three years, although he is best known for his work as a composer on British television, especially his long association with the BBC science-fiction series Doctor Who, for which he composed incidental music during the 1960s and 1970s.

Among his early television work was the music for Moonstrike (1963). Simpson was also responsible for the theme music for The Brothers (1972), The Tomorrow People (1973), Moonbase 3 (1973), The Ascent of Man (1973) and Blake's 7 (1978). He also composed music for several plays from the BBC Television Shakespeare series.

Simpson's first work on Doctor Who was during William Hartnell's era as the First Doctor in Planet of Giants, in 1964, but he is primarily associated with the programme in the 1970s. He also appeared on screen as a music hall conductor in the Fourth Doctor story The Talons of Weng-Chiang (1977) at the invitation of Philip Hinchcliffe who was the series producer at the time.[2] Simpson had to be paid a special fee for this appearance, as he was a member of the Musicians' Union and not Equity.

Special Feature - Dudley Simpson - Doctor Who - The Sun Makers
When John Nathan-Turner became producer of Doctor Who in 1980, he decided that the music needed to be updated, and took Simpson out for a meal telling him how much he appreciated his work on Doctor Who but that it would no longer be required as he intended to have the BBC Radiophonic Workshop provide music from that point. Simpson's last broadcast work on Doctor Who was for The Horns of Nimon.
